The purpose of education in the social sciences is to help young people develop the abilities necessary to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good. Today’s students are members of a culturally diverse society that exists in an increasingly interdependent world. They are also future voters in a democracy that will continue only as a result of citizen participation. A social science education provides knowledge of: • the ideals of democracy and the rights and responsibilities of citizens; • the principles of American government; • historical events and chronological relationships; • the process of historical analysis and diverse viewpoints; • the influence of groups and cultures on American perspectives.
