The Aurora Central/Hinkley Combined Air Force Junior ROTC Drill Team had a great weekend.

On Saturday, 3/6/2010, they competed in the Northern Plains Drill Competition at Loveland High School. The event hosted 15 teams from Canon City to Grand Junction to Cheyenne, Wyoming. These teams were comprised of 170 cadets from Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force Jr. ROTC units.

The Central/Hinkley combined team garnered a 1st place in regulation drill (led by Chris Ortiz), a 2nd in color guard (led by Melissa Lopez), a 3rd in regulation drill by first year cadets (led by Lashun Mosley), and 2nd (Melissa Lopez) and 3rd (Nahira Munguia) (out of 170 competitors) in individual drill performance.

The excellent performance in the individual events resulted in Central/Hinkley AFJROTC earning the Overall Team Championship.

Aurora Central/Hinkley Combined AFJROTC Drill Team

The trophies are great but not as impressive as the character, leadership, and teamwork that has allowed them to perform at such a consistent level. Aurora Central/Hinkley can all be proud of the traits these young men and women exhibit.

First Sergeant David Presnell (team coach) is to be congratulated for the excellent guidance he has given these future leaders. He's got them on a good vector.

For weeks, Ian Calvert has been telling his Aurora Central Trojans: "One more, one more . . ."

He gets to keep on telling that to the Trojans after Friday's hard-fought 65-60 victory over Highlands Ranch in the Class 5A's Great 8 at the Denver Coliseum.

Aurora Central will take a 20-6 record into Thursday's final four at the University of Colorado in Boulder. It will be the Trojans' first trip there in three seasons and comes after they turned in perhaps the surprise victory of the bracket Tuesday, a 69-65 win at Colorado Springs Metro League champion Fountain-Fort Carson.

The Varsity basketball team won their 2nd consecutive Skyline League title last night in a hotly contested game against Prairie View 64-54. Both teams headed into the game undefeated in league and Praire View had an 18-4 overall record. The Trojans used a 10-0 run to end the 1st quarter to seize control of the game. ACHS was led by Dese Lee with 20 points, 12 rebs and 4 blocks. The overall team record is 17-6 and next up for the Trojans is the state playoffs.
NOTE: The C team (sophomores) also finished Skyline League play and captured the league title.

The boys played a great game, defeating Overland and moving on to the "Sweet 16" on Tuesday, 3/2. They will be playing at Fountain-Fort Carson at 7 PM. Coach Calvert and his staff have done a great job with these guys throughout the season. Currently the ACHS team is the only APS team still in the playoffs.

March 3, 2010 -- The Battle of the Trojans took place last night in Fountain CO

The FFC (Fountain Fort Carson) Trojans were defeated by the ACHS TROJANS!!!!!

It was definitely an incredibly exciting game, back and forth with the score. Those of us who were fortunate enough to attend may have asthmatic symptoms today from holding our breath and/or screeching our lungs out!

With less than a minute to play, ACHS was ahead by 3 points, yet we knew that one of the players from FFC had an incredible 3 point shot that he connected more than once. HOWEVER . . . exhale . . . Dese Lee connected on a free throw, putting us up by 4 points with mere seconds left. Need I say more.

Our next game is on Friday, March 5, 2010, @ 4 p.m. in the Denver Coliseum against Highlands Ranch.

Aurora Central High School has kicked off the holiday season with a slate of events that will ensure support for some who are lacking common necessities at this time of the year.

This year's festivities began with the Annual Holiday dinner on November 3 made possible by the Leadership group who hosted, along with the Dance Team, Interact Club, Ambassador Club, Art Club, Choir, Trojanaires (Select Mixed Ensemble), Centralettes (Select Women's Ensemble), Jazz Band, Newspaper Staff, Yearbook Staff, School and Custodial staff, and some others who offered entertainment, service, and more than enough cheer to go around.

"We had an amazing turnout from the community, from volunteers, from clubs, and even from Santa Claus herself," said Jeffrey Sailor, "we could not have done it without the help of everyone, be it Leone for providing the tablecloths to the fiercely competitive giving of staff during the drive, to the custodial staff for their support and guidance, to all the staff members who helped and attended, and to anyone that I missed!"

Approximately 320 Thanksgiving dinners were served, 150 grocery bags of non-perishables and canned goods gathered from the Aurora Central Food Drive were given away, along with 70 toys and numerous winter coats, sweaters, and blankets to those in attendance.

Other community support for this event came from a Boy Scout troop in the Eaglecrest area, and the Salvation Army. As Jeff Sailor says, "Way to go Central! We came together as a community and made great things happen!"

Make sure to attend the Aurora Central High School Vocal Music Department's Holiday Choir Concerts on December 14 and December 17 in the Troutman Theater. Performances begin at 7:00 p.m. on each night, featuring the same program but with different soloists for each performance. The concerts will feature the Jazz Choir, the 7th and 8th period Women's Choirs combined, the Men's Choir, the Centralettes (Advanced Women's Ensemble), and the Trojanaires (Select Mixed Ensemble), with some traditional combined choir presentations as a finale. Tickets are $2.00 at the door, with all APS employees and children under 10 admitted free of charge.
